Father Carl's Corner - October 5, 2025
The simple phrase “What would Jesus do?” has guided Christians for generations. It is not just a slogan, but a challenge to pause before we speak or act and to let Christ’s example shape our choices. In our country today, and even in the Church, we see hatred and division being stirred - even by some who speak in the name of religion. Jesus himself warned against those who misuse God’s name to burden or mislead others. When we ask, “What would Jesus do?’ the answer is NEVER hatred, fear, or exclusion, but it is ALWAYS mercy, compassion, forgiveness, and truth spoken in love.
If Jesus were here today, he would not be shouting insults or dividing communities. He would be healing wounds, uplifting the brokenhearted, and reminding us that every person is a beloved child of God. The gospel calls us to do the same.
So, when we are faced with the anger and hostility that seem so common in public life, let us resist being pulled into it. Instead, let us be guided by Christ’s way - choosing peace over hostility, understanding over judgement, and love over hate. This is not weakness; it is the true strength of discipleship.
In the end, the question is not only “What would Jesus do?” but also “What will we do?” As followers of Christ, we are called to be different. We do not answer hatred with more hatred, but with courage, compassion, and truth, spoken in love. This is how we keep faith alive in a world that desperately needs HOPE.
In the week ahead if you are confronted with anger or words of division, pause and ask - “What would Jesus do?” then, choose the path of love. Sometimes that might just mean smiling and walking away.
Today’s readings encourage us to remember as well that faith begins with the gratitude and humility of the servant in today’s gospel: to realize that we have all been created in the image of a loving God and that the only meaningful return we can make for this life is to love and honor one another as sisters and brothers thus “servants” at the table of the Father.
Finally, October, the month of the Rosary, invites us to pray with Mary as she points us to Christ, the Prince of Peace. Each bead becomes a step away from fear and anger, and a step toward hope and reconciliation. In this way, the Rosary is truly a prayer for peace.
Consider praying the Rosary at home as a family or joining the Rosary for Peace group on Saturdays at Saint Giles Church at 8:30 AM after the 8:00 AM Mass.
Have a blessed and safe week ahead.
With you a Christian. For you, a priest.

The Church dedicates the coming month of October to #HolyRosary. I invite everyone to pray the Rosary for #Peace each day of the month - individually, in the family, in community.
On Saturday, October 11, at 6:00 PM, we will pray the Rosary together in Saint Peter’s Square, during the vigil of the Jubilee of Marian Spirituality, also recalling the anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council.
WE HAVE A NEW WEBSITE!
The new website launched on July 1 and replaces the two previous websites. Each legacy website has a landing page that will notify visitors of the change. The new website is a work-in-progress as we continue to add content and updates. As you begin to explore the new website, please share your feedback with us. We hope the website reflects the vibrant, welcoming spirit of our Catholic community.
This week at St. Giles School
Mrs. Elwart’s class! - Kindergarten Lions dove into the world of germs and discovered just how fast they can spread! With shaving cream, bread, and glitter, students got to see up close how germs move from one surface to another. These fun, hands-on experiments highlighted the importance of handwashing and making healthy choices every day.
Lion's Leap is Back with a Roar!
A St. Giles School tradition for more than three decades, our biggest annual fundraiser, Lion’s Leap, kicked off Tuesday September 23 with a roar! Halls are being decorated, classes are getting excited – and ready! – to raise $100,000 and give back to a school that gives so much to us all.
Lion’s Leap gives students the chance to get involved in raising funds that go directly to offset the costs of their St. Giles School education. Every student - from our littlest Lions in PreK to our leaders in 8th grade - collect pledges for competing in an obstacle course (for students in 6th 8th) and a fun run (for students in PreK-5th) on Friday, October 3.
As members of our extended St. Giles School family, you can support our Lions by making a donation to our fundraising campaign.
Thank you for your support! Please feel free to reach out to us directly at (708) 383-6279 or visit

National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Program
Today, I’m delighted to congratulate two of our schools – Ascension School and St. Giles School – on their individual achievements in the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Program.
As you may know, the Blue Ribbon program has long been regarded as a prestigious honor given to select schools nationwide that demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and exceptional teaching and learning. Earlier this year,
the Council for American Private Education (CLICK HERE) nominated both Ascension School and St. Giles School to the Blue Ribbon program as part of a rigorous evaluation process of schools nationwide. Being nominated is a notable achievement and schools must meet a set of criteria to even be considered for the award.
On Wednesday, September 24, Greg Richmond, Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools Superintendent,
recognized the Chicago-area schools that were awarded (CLICK HERE) the Blue Ribbon for 2025. I’m thrilled to share that St. Giles was among the 10 schools in the Archdiocese to receive the Blue Ribbon, placing it among the top 15% of schools nationwide. This prestigious recognition is one that every student, parent and teacher should be proud of.
As a faith community, we are blessed to have three vibrant Catholic schools that each deliver a nurturing, faith-filled educational experience to its students. Being recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School nominee or award winner reflects Ascension and St. Giles’ shared commitment to academic excellence, strong student outcomes, and faith.
Congratulations to both schools on their nomination and to St. Giles on its award. Your parish community is proud of you!

Fall Sessions for First Communion Preparation for Older Children in 4th through 8th Grade
Children who are in 4th Grade through 8th Grade and have not yet received their First Communion are welcome to join with their peers to prepare for celebrating the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion during the Fall.
Sessions begin on Monday, October 20, and will continue on Mondays through mid-December. All sessions will meet at 4:30 PM at the Saint Giles Campus Parish Center at 1025 Columbian Avenue.
There will be a parent information meeting on Monday, October 6, at 7 pm at the St. Giles Parish Center.
Children who attend all preparation sessions and celebrate their first Reconciliation during the course of the sessions will be able to celebrate their First Communion at any of the weekend Masses in the churches in our two parishes of Ascension and Saint Edmund or Saint Catherine of Siena-Saint Lucy and Saint Giles.
OCIA Companion Sponsor
A Companion Sponsor for OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults) is a parishioner who would like to accompany a person who is preparing to receive the sacraments. While the individual will have a formal sponsor who they choose, a Companion Sponsor plays a vital role in helping the person understand what it means to live as a Catholic and assist in integrating the individual into the life of the Catholic community.
A Companion Sponsor is expected to connect with the person one or two times each month. Activities may include (but aren’t limited to) the following:
- Attend mass together
- Share a meal
- Go to speakers or other events in the Oak Park Catholic parishes
- Go to a Catholic baptism, funeral, or wedding
- Take a walk
- Talk about faith
- Participate in volunteer service
Companion Sponsors will receive training prior to being paired with an individual and will continue to be supported while they work with a person.
